Eucalyptus platypus
ROUND LEAVED MOORT
Myrtaceae family
W Australia Albany-Esperance (King George Sound)
Distinctive in its elongated and flat peduncles, this mallee Eucalyptus can grow to heights of 30 feet. The leaf structure is how it gets its name. The Greek word "platy" means flat or broad and the Greek word "pous" refers to the English word foot. It produces greenish, creamy or sometimes red flowers in spring and summer. First described by William Jackson Hooker in 1851, it is somewhat rare to find in cultivation. Presidio Park has two medium sized specimens. Native to a very small geographic area in southern Western Australia, specifically the King George Sound region.
