Eucalyptus globulus
BLUE GUM
Myrtaceae family
Extreme SE Australia/Tasmania
Another of Australia's exports to the world, these trees have been planted in cultivation worldwide. They are a very tall species with normal growth to 180 feet, even though one specimen growing in Tasmania has reached a height of 300 feet. The Latin word "globulus" means little button, given on account of the shape of it operculum (top of seed pod). First known European documentation of Eucalyptus globulus was made by Antoine Raymond Joseph de Bruni d'Entrecasteaux who, searching for a lost French expedition in 1792, found the blue gum growing in extreme southeastern Australia. Eucalyptus globulus is endemic to parts of Tasmania and southern Victoria, specifically the Otway Ranges and Southern Gippsland, where a relatively cool and rainy climate dominate.
