Eucalyptus citriodora

LEMON-SCENTED GUM

Myrtaceae family ENE Australia (coastal)

Eucalyptus citriodora has a smooth white bark and reaches heights of more than 100 feet. Its leaves form at the end of top branches and its canopy is less dense than some other eucalyptus species. Growing in its native habitat of North Eastern Australia they prefer coastal regions where frosts do not occur but they can also grow naturally up to 200 miles inland in its southern habitat range where average temperatures are warmer. Eucalyptus citriodora leaves exude a pungent citrus smell. The oils from these leaves have been used for hundreds of years in perfumes, insect repellants, as an inhaler for colds and as an ingredient in certain antiseptics. Eucalyptus citriodora is a favorite of beekeepers due to the high quality amber honey produced. In Presidio Park we still have several older trees that were documented by Park Superintendent Percy Broell in his 1937 plant identification project.
