Eucalyptus camaldulensis (formerly rostrata)
RED GUM
Myrtaceae family
Australia Interior (Outback)
One of the most common and prolific of all of the Australian Eucalyptus species, these massive trees can reach heights of 145 feet. They can be found growing along river beds and have the largest natural distribution of any other Eucalyptus. They have been widely distributed worldwide and can be found in most mild, temperate and tropical climates. Interestingly, the species name, camaldulensis has been given to this species due to the Italian garden, L'Hortus Camaldulensis di Napoli in which Frederick Dehnhardt first described it in 1832. Presidio Park has numerous specimens.
