Erythrina coralloides
NAKED CORAL TREE
Fabaceae family
E Mexico
The genus Erythrina contains about 130 species and can be found worldwide in sub-tropical and tropical regions. Erythrina coralloides is endemic to eastern parts of Mexico. It is an interesting species not only for the shape of its inflorescence but also in the fact that unlike most flowering plants the flowers occur prior to leaf development - thus "naked" coral tree. Erythrina coralloides can reach heights of 15 feet and is drought tolerant, and the seeds are hazardous for human consumption. Presidio Park has several specimens but one in particular has grown in such a way that it is an oddity.
