Drosanthemum floribundum

PURPLE CARPET

Aizoaceae family Extreme S South Africa

Presidio Park staff is frequently asked about this pink flowering ground cover when it puts off its colorful early spring show. Introduced in the early 1930s by Park Superintendent Percy Broell, today it acts like a stabilizer for many of the hillsides along roadways. Drosanthemum floribundum is native to a very small geographic area at the tip of Africa where it is known to grow both along the coast as well as inland in the drier areas of the Little Karoo.
