Native to the desert regions of northern Mexico and the southern United States, this plant can reach heights of 4 feet. It inhabits rocky hillsides and grassland at altitudes of 3000-6000 feet. The Native American traditional drink of sotol, threads for basket making, and as a food source are all uses of the Dasylirion wheeleri. The species name is in honor of Lieutenant George M. Wheeler who led a geographic and geological survey (Wheeler Survey) of the southwest United States in 1879.
