Chamaerops humilis
HAIR PALM/MEDITERRANEAN FAN PALM
Arecaceae family
S Europe/Mediterranean region
The only species represented in the Chamaerops genus, it is the only palm native to Europe. Growing naturally in Spain and Portugal, southwest Europe. The most northerly known naturally occurring Chamaerops humilis is on the Italian island of Capraia. However, the Mediterranean fan palm is known to grow in northern Germany as well as in the gardens of the Palace of Versailles. It is known as one of only a few palms that can survive a hard frost. Considered a shrub-like palm, it has several stems or trunks that exude from a single base. C. humilis does have rhizomes that can quickly sprout anew if not controlled.
