Commonly found in Mediterranean climates worldwide the Carissa macrocarpa is native to the coastal strip of South Africa, specifically sand dunes and coastal forests from Cape Town northward to Southern Mozambique. This spiny shrub produces long, lobed, stark white flowers followed by green and then red fruit. This edible fruit is made into jams, jellies, and sauces. In its native Africa it has been utilized as a corral for livestock due to its spiny nature.
