Presidio Park Plant Survey

Brachychiton acerifolius

ILLAWARRA FLAME TREE

Malvaceae family NE and central Australia (coastal)

Endemic to the subtropical rainforests of the east coast of Australia its red bell shaped flowers typically follow the shedding of it leaves during the dry season. It is considered one of the most outstanding flowering trees in the world. However, in Presidio Park as elsewhere outside of its normal climate there is no certain prediction as to exactly when the bell-shaped flowers will appear. It can be fickle. Possible of heights of up to 130 feet it seldom reaches such heights outside of coastal Australia. First written documentation of Brachychiton acerifoliuswas described by W. Macarthur and C. Moore in 1855.
