Artemisia californica
COASTAL SAGEBRUSH
Asteraceae family
Southern California/N Baja (coastal)
This native Southern California brush can be found throughout the coastal regions of Southern California and Baja. Coastal sage brush is not considered a true sage but has traditionally been used in cooking, for spice and boiled for use in tea. In its natural habitat Artemisia californica can be found with other native species such as Heteromeles arbutifolia (toyon) and Rhus integrifolia (lemonade berry.), to name a few. As with many of the native plants in Presidio Park it is possible that some were left in place during the original horticultural plantings intentionally, to be part of the landscape design. Percy Broell stated this in his 1936 manuscript. Those that survive today tend to be larger and more unique than the native plantings that have occurred in more recent times. In the last 10 to 20 years there have been many native plants reintroduced into the park.
