Agave lechuguilla

LECHUGUILLA/SHIN DAGGER

Asparagaceae family N central Mex., S central US desert, Chihuahuan Desert

These shin daggers were used by the Native Americans for use in ropes, mats and brushes. Its "shin dagger" designation may have been applied during the European colonization of the area as the sharp points were quite dangerous for a rider on horseback. Agave lechuguilla occur naturally only in the Chihuahuan Desert and are thus considered an indicator species showing the health of the Chihuahuan Desert.
