Presidio Park Plant Survey

Agave Americana

MAQUAY

Asparagaceae family North and central Mexico

Although sometimes referred to as the century plant this native of Central and Northern Mexico usually only lives between ten and thirty years. After sending up a large shoot, sometimes up to five times its height, it dies. But it does reproduce proficiently by dropping seeds from the tall shoots and therefore the Agave Americana can continue to exist in the same area for generations. In Presidio Park, Percy Broell planted numerous Agave Americanas and today we can still see this species growing prolifically in the same areas as the original plantings. Many of these Agaves are quite large and are seldom seen this large. The practical uses for Agave Americana are numerous. Its fibrous petals have been used in clothing and for shelter. This Agave species has also been used for the production of distilled spirits by fermenting the extracted liquid.
