With rosettes so dark that they appear black this native of the Canary Islands should be protected from frost. The Aeonium arboreum schwarzkopf growing undisturbed in Presidio Park rest on an eastern facing slope with minimal yearly sunlight—an anomaly as many succulents need abundant sunlight. It produces a striking yellow flower that contrasts vividly against its black rosettes. The nomenclature given this aeonium arboreum "schwarzkopf" is a German word meaning "black head"; Schwartz = black, and kopf = head.
