THIS AWARD HONORS the meticulous restoration of two historic homes in the Bankers Hill community. Sitting across the street from San Diego's iconic Balboa Park on 6th Avenue, these homes represent early 19th-century development surrounding Balboa Park and showcase exemplary Prairie and Arts and Crafts era designs. Suffering from conversion into multi-unit buildings, removal of windows, and dilapidated wood and stucco, these once beautiful single-family homes had lost their luster.
When the owner acquired these properties, he began an extensive restoration of the exterior and full renovation of the interior. With the expertise of a preservation architect, historian, interior designer, custom window and door craftsman, structural engineer, contractors and more, the homes came back to life by restoring the original style of stucco texture, repaired original wood windows, restored original floor plans, while adding modern amenities in the kitchens, bathrooms, which had been poorly remodeled over the years, and landscaping.
Now, these homes stand out along one of San Diego's most architecturally important streets. Seen by hundreds of locals and tourists alike every day, these properties are a gift that exemplifies the history of the San Diego community to all who encounter them. Congratulations to Dan Floit of Floit Properties, Inc., on his Gift to the Street Commercial Restoration Award and for a job well done.
