WHEN IT COMES TO ADVOCATING for the preservation and protection of historic structures, persistence can literally go a long way. Our next winners learned just that when they acquired two quirky historic buildings in 2008 and spent over a decade upholding their integrity with a goal of a National Register nomination.
When these two unique buildings came up for sale, they also came under threat of demolition. Being built in Southern California's iconic 20th-century novelty roadside architectural style, not everyone appreciated these atypical designs that pushed the boundaries of what a building can be. Luckily, there was a group of dedicated preservationists that did, and they started a preservation association specifically dedicated to protecting these structures for years to come. Purchased through a mix of funds, including those for affordable housing, the association also ensured that four additional units of housing on the property must remain "affordable housing" for lower-income residents.
In 2019, the association achieved its goal of getting these two community landmarks listed historic with the National Register of Historic Places. Achieving this goal, paired with providing housing to a diverse group of tenants, ensures enjoyment of these resources by any and all people for years to come. SOHO presents the triumphant Roadside Stewardship Award to Sean Englert and the Encinitas Preservation Association for dedicated care of the Encinitas Boathouses.
