University of California San Diego
Cultural Landscape Documentation Award
Since the 1960s, the University of California, San Diego has grown swiftly from a small biological field station to a campus rich in architectural, cultural, and landscape assets. A study begun in 2015 identified, evaluated, and documented these historic and cultural resources through 1985 to make sure they are known and appropriately managed as the campus continues to expand.
The study reveals a strong sense of place defined by an extraordinary collection of intact, high-style buildings and landscapes designed by many of Southern California's most esteemed Modernists. They include Irving Gill, Lloyd Ruocco, Robert Mosher, Robert Alexander, William Pereira, A. Quincy Jones, and others. Their work forms one of California's finest collections of Modernist institutional architecture.
The team found that 32 individual buildings, four historic districts, and four non-building resources were eligible for the National Register of Historic Places and/or the California Register.
For completing the first known, coordinated effort to document the historic and cultural resources of a post-World War 2 American university, and for calling attention to Modernism's indelible impact on our collective heritage, SOHO heartily honors UCSD Campus Planning, Architectural Resources Group, David Neuman of Neu Campus Planning, and Paul V. Turner with the Cultural Landscape Documentation award.
