SRM Urban
Commercial Rehabilitation Award
Constructed between 1926 and 1929, this mixed-use, two-story Mission Revival Style building is one of several prominent, early 20th century commercial structures in Normal Heights. These anchor buildings have survived nearly 100 years of economic ups and downs. They define the community's historic character and especially the pedestrian's sense of place, and have played a key role in the recent revitalization of Adams Avenue.
Designated #415 on the city's historic register, the brick Wilkinson Block houses apartments above street-level businesses, some of which were pioneers in the neighborhood's latest wave of renewal. The rehabilitation of this large building was not only costly, but logistically difficult, since the owners had to minimize the impact on all tenants while extensive work was underway.
The project entailed a complete seismic upgrade required by the City of San Diego and the repointing of the entire brick façe. The original wood windows, part of the historic designation, were nonetheless removed by a previous owner and all have since been rebuilt.
Because of the dedication of its owners, the handsome façade of the Wilkinson Block is like new again, and the building is assured of its prominent role long into the future. We are pleased to honor SRM Urban with a Commercial Restoration award.
