Dr. Craig & Haruko Salt
Residential Restoration Award

Dr. Craig & Haruko SaltConstructed in 1920, this unusual two-story Prairie Style residence had been altered drastically over time. When the owners purchased it in 2014, it was the only house on the block that had not been restored.

A number of misguided exterior alterations detracted from the Jesse and Dora Fleming House's original, geometric design. These changes included a late 1940s upstairs balcony enclosure, a non-historic front door and window replacements, a front entrance remodel that removed the original overhanging porch roof, and a modern metal driveway gate with faux stone pillars. In that condition, the property stood out among an otherwise historically intact row of architectural gems, some of which had been designated by the City of San Diego.

The homeowners wish to landmark their home also, so in 2016 they began a meticulous, two-year exterior restoration. An early photograph helped guide the work, including the re-creation of the original front door.

In addition to restoring their home's authentic appearance, they returned visual harmony to an important historic block on one of San Diego's most architecturally iconic streets. We congratulate to Dr. Craig and Haruko Salt on their Residential Restoration award for a job well done.
