Tammy Manse & AE Miller
Residential Restoration Award
When fire damaged this 1927 Spanish Colonial Revival style home in Mission Hills, its owners were already planning extensive work. Even before the fire, the interior needed repairs and the exterior was calling out for restoration.
Despite many existing and new challenges, the couple pushed on and returned the house to its original appearance from the street. They removed extensive 1980s era features such as a front wall, gate and fountain, and a non-historic wood trellis. Wood windows were restored, including an original stained-glass window. In the fire-damaged living room, the unique scalloped wood ceiling beams were salvaged, reworked, and reintegrated into the new ceiling design. Prior to submitting a historic designation report to the City's Historical Resources Board, the owners worked with the board for its approval of a small rear addition that was designed consistent with the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for historic buildings.
For careful and thoughtful work bringing the historic Alan Le May Residence "back from the ashes," SOHO congratulates Tammy Manse and AE Miller on their Residential Restoration award.
