Klonie Kunzel & the La Playa Trails Association
Keeper of the Flame Award
This group of preservationists and their leader work to commemorate the oldest European trail along the Pacific Coast. First traversed by Kumeyaay Indians and later by Spanish explorers, the La Playa Trail stretches from the harbor entrance to Mission San Diego de Alcalá, and beyond. There are at least 70 historically designated sites along the path.
The La Playa Trail Association raises funds to erect and repair historic monuments and markers, many of which are about 100 years old. Just last year, they dedicated a plaque celebrating the 1869 founding of Roseville by San Diego's first Jewish settler Louis Rose. Their 2016 book Point Loma, which is part of Arcadia Books "Images of America" series, is among their lasting contributions to preserving the region's important early history with text and rare historic photographs.
None of these projects would be possible without a great leader to keep the work focused and moving ahead. She is the group's president and one of its original founders. As the unstoppable force behind its many accomplishments, SOHO is pleased to honor Klonie Kunzel and the La Playa Trails Association with SOHO's Keeper of the Flame award.
