Jonathan Segal, FAIA
Commercial Rehabilitation Award
As an award-winning architect and developer, Jonathan Segal has designed dense, high-profile residential buildings in popular neighborhoods such as Little Italy and North Park. For this project in Little Italy, he didn't match the neighboring high-rises, but instead chose to restore a 1926 Spanish Revival style bungalow court.
Long before the recent so-called "tiny house" craze, modest, one-story bungalow courts throughout Southern California offered single working people an alternative to apartment living. Now, fast forward nearly 100 years. The Gordon M. Wells/Allen H. Hilton Bungalow Court is in sparkling condition, and its 286-square-foot studio apartments present downtown renters with an attractive alternative to high-rise living.
These cottages remind us of what San Diego was like in the days when even rental homes were designed to provide beauty, dignity, and comfort … through simplicity, efficiency, and refreshing, shared gardens.
SOHO applauds Jonathan Segal, FAIA, for saving and restoring this once-threatened bungalow court. We thank him for having the vision to undertake this handsome project and look forward to more work from him in the field of historic preservation.
