Jessica Johnson
Town Crier Award
This creative, energetic person launched her Hidden San Diego website in 2010. The beautifully designed and easily navigable website features historical places, abandoned and haunted sites, old stage routes, and other "lost" history. Its rich and engaging content appeals to people of all ages, especially anyone wanting to explore the region's lesser-known historic wonders. It promotes historic preservation and a deep appreciation for our social and cultural heritage.
Her stunning photography of her own adventures on foot captures the essence of the places she writes about. And she recently published a book of photography called Abandoned San Diego. But if a resource is fragile or vulnerable, she withholds the exact location, always urging her readers to act responsibly.
This Poway resident has transformed the internet and social media into powerful preservation tools. Hidden San Diego has 22,000 Facebook followers and more than 1,600 gorgeous posts on Instagram. She occasionally writes a column for the CityBeat weekly too.
SOHO is proud to award Jessica Johnson the Town Crier award, for sharing some of San Diego's most enchanting and obscure places, and for connecting with young people who will carry on the preservation cause for decades to come.
