Barbara & Joe Harper
Residential Restoration Award
This large, 1927 Mission Revival style residence in Del Mar could have easily fallen into the hands of an insensitive developer and been demolished to make way for 2 or 3 expensive new homes. So, it's almost a miracle that the long neglected home was saved. Somehow, despite its dauntingly run-down condition and unattractive alterations, a fearless couple recognized its charm and bought it for the timeless value of its historic architecture.
Built during Del Mar's heyday as a playground for Hollywood stars, the architecture of the J.M. Cornue House represents the romantic elegance of the 1920s. Literally camping out in one wing and then another while the interior was being remodeled, the owners lovingly and painstakingly brought the property back to its original glory. The living room's original plaster fireplace and wood ceiling with trusses were restored, and outside, wherever original materials could be reused, such as the clay roof tiles, they were put back in place.
For having a clear vision and the will to preserve an endangered, classic, masterpiece of domestic architecture, SOHO salutes Barbara and Joe Harper with a triumphant Residential Restoration award.
