Don Fay & Laura Wile
Residential Restoration Award
This distinctive, Inspiration Heights Prairie Style residence with unobstructed bay views was touted as "strictly modern" when it was built in 1913. Two of its three bathrooms had showers, and the hall was piped for a vacuum cleaner. It was designed by architect W.B. Melhorn for the Alberta Security Company, a real estate investment firm who also developed bungalow tracts throughout Mission Hills.
Known historically as the Swan House, the stucco-clad residence has gently sloping hip roofs covered in mission tile and a central two-story turret on the front. This unique feature makes the house a neighborhood landmark. Until its recent, ambitious restoration, the house was known equally for its notably rundown appearance. Like many once celebrated early 20th century high-end homes, it had been the victim of poor exterior remodeling and deferred maintenance. For years, if not decades, concerned neighbors held their breath, wondering what would happen.
For a jaw-dropping transformation of the Swan House from eyesore to inspiration, we are pleased to recognize Don Fay and Laura Wile with a PIP award for Residential Restoration.
