Residential Restoration Award
When this two-story Prairie School style home in Mission Hills went on the market, many thought it was destined to be a "tear down." The house had suffered years of neglect, inappropriate "wedding cake" re-stuccoing, and insensitive 1970s additions. Thankfully, the new owners, who bought the house in 2015, embraced the role of preservationists. What they lacked in experience, they made up for in ambition. They wanted an authentic historic house, and their mission was to reverse the modern changes, restore their home's striking 1913 design, and get it designated by the City.
The home's original owner, Robert J. Kelly, was a major investor in the Mission Hills Subdivision. In 1909, he purchased nearly a dozen lots in Mission Hills, including the site for his new home. The contractor he hired, John A. Robinson, lived in Mission Hills and built a number of homes there. One or both men were aware of Master Architect Irving J. Gill's early modernist homes being built nearby, as the stark, boxy architecture of this house reflects his influence in its cubist forms and unadorned walls.
