Dan Soderberg
In the Trenches Award
Documentary filmmaker and photographer Dan Soderberg is well-known in the local preservation community for his involvement in efforts to save important landmarks like the California Theatre, Agua Caliente Racetrack Mural, Topps Nightclub, the Villa Montezuma, Balboa Park, and more.
He volunteers much of his time to community groups and non-profits. In the past, he served as Vice President of SOHO's board of directors and the chair of the Neighborhood Historic Preservation Coalition. He is currently a member of the Normal Heights Community Planning Group.
A UCLA graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, he uses his film and photography as well as writing talents to highlight causes he believes in. He is as comfortable narrating his films on camera as he is behind the lens. The documentary he was commissioned to make for SOHO's 40th anniversary, Four Decades of Historic Preservation in San Diego County, won a Governor's Historic Preservation Award in 2010.
When an important San Diego site is imperiled, he can always be counted on to advocate on its behalf in front of the Historical Resources Board and the City Council. After many hard fought battles, he continues to be an active voice through social media and his online blog, where he shares his own stunning architectural photographs, rare historic images, and interesting research findings.
For all the advocacy and multimedia outreach Dan Soderberg has contributed over many years to help save some of San Diego's most valued treasures, SOHO is pleased to honor him the In the Trenches award.
