Christine & Jim Cunning
Residential Restoration Award
This couple has had a close relationship with SOHO for nearly a decade. In fact, they are two of our wonderful Marston House neighbors here on 7th Avenue. They generously opened their spectacular 1905 residence, the Alice Lee House, for the 2010 SOHO home tour. That event offered guests a pre-restoration look at this house designed by Irving J. Gill with Hazel Wood Waterman, San Diego's first woman architect. The house is named for its original owner, a wealthy social reformer and patron of Gill.
By the time the owners arrived in 2008, the Lee House was in poor condition, having endured more than forty years of benign neglect and several alterations during the first half of the 20th century. The home's state of "arrested development" and decay provided a fascinating view into its evolution and Gill's construction techniques.
The extensive multi-year restoration and rehabilitation project included rebuilding a balcony that had been removed, reconfiguring the 1950s kitchen and master bathroom, and repairing, refinishing, and painting exterior and interior features. Outside, walls and a roof were removed to restore a patio, the pergola was rebuilt, and the original landscaping restored.
