Commercial Restoration and Adaptive Reuse Award
The remarkable transformation of the St. Joseph's Sisters of Mercy Hospital Annex into a bustling commercial and social hub in the heart of Hillcrest is undeniable proof that historic preservation supports the important economic and cultural growth of communities.
Built in the 1890s, the Victorian Era, two-story wooden hospital sat vacant and deteriorating for years. Its fate was uncertain, and it was listed on SOHO's Most Endangered List in 2014.
Suddenly in early 2018, something magical happened. Following a meticulous historic restoration, the exterior may look better than it has since it was built more than one hundred years ago. The owners have acknowledged the former hospital's unique history by retaining many of its original exterior and interior features, including the massive skylights and windows that once lit surgeons' operating tables. Blending old with new, the interior is a stunning feast for the eyes.
