Craig Harwood & Gary Fogel
Wrighting a Wrong Award
Craig Harwood and Gary Fogel published a thoroughly documented book about a lone San Diego inventor who tested gliders here as early as the 1880s. The authors maintain that John J. Montgomery is the true father of aviation in the Western Hemisphere. They are Montgomery's great-grand nephew and a San Diego historian who helped preserve Torrey Pines Glider Port, and they teamed up to dig into what had previously been contested records. The well-researched revision of the traditional narrative of U.S. aviation history, shifting its geographical origins from Kitty Hawk, North Carolina to San Diego, is of tremendous importance to San Diego's history and this seminal work allows San Diego to take its rightful place in world aviation history. Aviation experts and historians have all endorsed the men's book, Quest for Flight: John J. Montgomery and the Dawn of Aviation in the West.
