Residential Restoration
The 1913 Arts & Crafts-style residence offers a lesson in restoring a badly remodeled historic resource by embracing historic preservation standards and principles. Situated on a prominent corner lot on scenic Sunset Boulevard in Mission Hills, the Henry and Lavina Nelson House had suffered extensive, heavy-handed exterior remodeling in the 1960s and 70s, erasing its fine half-timbering and other important character-defining features such as its decorative wood corbels, knee braces, trim, shingles and brickwork.
It is stunning proof that even after years of misguided choices and unfortunate changes, a home can be fully restored to its original beautiful appearance.
