Trailblazing Women Architects of California

Sarai Johnson of Johnson & Johnson Architecture is a Marston House historian and the site's former manager for nine years. She will discuss San Diego's first woman architect, Hazel Wood Waterman, who apprenticed with Irving Gill, the region's leading modernist, and went on to design buildings on her own. Ione R. Stiegler, FAIA, leads her own preservation architecture firm, now in its 30th year, and received the first American Institute of Architects California Council Distinguished Practice Award for preservation. She will talk about Julia Morgan, the famed architect of Hearst Castle at San Simeon, Asilomar conference center, and the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco. Morgan was the first woman to become a licensed architect in California. Moderator Jennifer Macdonald is an architect specializing in historic preservation and a Marston House docent.

Sarai Johnson, of Johnson & Johnson Architecture, is an architectural historian and historic preservationist. She has co-authored more than 50 historical designations, documenting important buildings and prominent citizens in the Southern California region. Her professional research includes the George and Anna Marston family members and their extensive social and philanthropic contributions to the greater San Diego community. She frequently provides resourced historic content for articles, books, lectures, museum exhibits, video and television programs. She has been involved with the Marston House Museum & Gardens for more than 20 years and been an advocate for its ongoing success for the past 9 years with Save Our Heritage Organisation.

Jennifer Macdonald is an emerging architect specializing in historic preservation. After completing a Master of Architecture degree with a concentration in historic preservation from Cal Poly Pomona in 2012, she spent 6 years with the San Diego firm Ferguson Pape Baldwin Architects (FPBA) doing complex commercial projects in the biotech and civic sectors. Notable projects include the recently completed Critical Support Services Building for the Coachella Valley Water District in Palm Desert, CA and the Alpine Library for the San Diego County Library system in Alpine, CA. Jennifer's experience with FPBA allowed her to complete rigorous California architect licensure in 2016. As of January 2019, she has partnered full-time with Paul and Sarai Johnson of Johnson & Johnson Architecture who run a long-standing historic preservation architecture practice in San Diego. Jennifer has been a volunteer guided tour docent at the Marston House since 2013 and currently leads the "Architectural Details of Master Architects Hebbard & Gill" tour on the third Sunday of each month.

Ione R. Stiegler, FAIA is the Principal Architect for IS Architecture, currently celebrating its 30th year. Her studio specializes in applying the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties and have completed projects implementing all four approved treatments; Restoration, Preservation, Rehabilitation, and Reconstruction. Together Ione R. Stiegler, FAIA, and her studio have rehabilitated or restored more than 100 institutional historic structures, 18 adobe buildings, and more than 100 historic homes. Founded in 1989, IS Architecture has won 84 professional awards, including several California Governor's Awards, and a 2014 "Best in American Living" Home of the Year and "One-of-a-Kind Custom Design" award, both from the National Association of Homebuilders. Ione R. Stiegler, FAIA is a leading expert in the nation in historic adobe and earthen structures. Ms. Stiegler is also the only practicing Architect in California that is an active member of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) International Committee on Earthen Architectural Heritage, the organization at the forefront of earthen architecture conservation. Ms. Stiegler was elevated to Fellow of the American Institute of Architecture (FAIA) - an honor bestowed on only two percent of all AIA members. More recently, Ms. Stiegler's firm was awarded the Distinguished Practice Award by the American Institute of Architects California Council. This award recognizes significant contributions and accomplishments toward a specific building type or practice area. It was the first time that the AIACC had ever bestowed this award specifically in recognition of an architect's preservation work.
