Why Old Places Matter
Why Old Places Matter will be discussed by three long-time SOHO leaders informed by a recent book of the same name and subtitled "How Historic Places Affect Our Identity and Well-Being." As author Thompson M. Mayes of the National Trust for Historic Preservation notes, we may not always see past bricks, mortar, and the significant people and events they contained, but historic buildings and sites play a major role in the social, psychological, and emotional fabric of our complex culture and enrich our quality of life, as individuals and collectively.
Panelists include Jaye MacAskill, SOHO's immediate past president and a professional researcher; Dan Soderberg, maker of SOHO's award-winning documentary "Four Decades of Historic Preservation in San Diego County" and a board member; and David Swarens, also a board member who twice served as president and who helped create two large historic districts in the City of San Diego. Each speaker will illustrate the book's concepts, using examples from SOHO's preservation efforts over 50 years. The concepts include memory, continuity, beauty, ancestors, creativity, community, and sustainability. Amie Hayes, SOHO's Historic Resources Specialist, will moderate the panel.
Jaye MacAskill is a long-time SOHO board member and past board president. Growing up in Canada on rural Vancouver Island, she was fortunate to experience San Diego on numerous occasions as a child and young adult during regular trips south to visit her grandparents.
After completing her BA and an additional three-year college program in Museum Studies in Ottawa, she left Canada in 1999 to work in the archives of the New York Transit Museum. Her first effort in the field of historic preservation was to help organize a non-profit group intent on saving an abandoned WPA-era outdoor swimming pool complex in Greenpoint, Brooklyn which has since been brought back to life.
Jaye moved to San Diego in 2003 and obtained a Masters Degree in Public History from the University of San Diego in 2005. She works as a freelance researcher/ writer and historical consultant, and is the current board chair of the Burlesque Hall of Fame Museum in Las Vegas, an organization she has been involved with since graduate school.
Dan Soderberg is a 63-year native of San Diego County. As a film maker and photographer Dan wrote, directed, and produced the documentary film 40 Years Of Historic Preservation In San Diego County for SOHO, released in 2010. Shortly afterwords, the project received a Governor's Award for Historic Preservation in California. Dan has served as Chair of the Neighborhood Historic Preservation Coalition, spearheaded Facebook pages for specific Preservation Issues including San Diego Historic Neon, Tops/Fat City, The California Theatre Caliente Mural, the Don Diego Tower, May Company Mission Valley, and others. Recently he resumed a seat on SOHO's Board of Directors on which he served on once before.
David Swarens is a San Diego Historic Preservation veteran. He has worked with SOHO since the mid '80s, and served twice as president. David has been involved with the creation of two larger historic districts, Sherman Heights and more recently South Park, and owns a historic bungalow in each (1923 and 1912), and has won People In Preservation awards for both of these, including 2018 Preservationist of the Year with the SP team. And he interprets the music of Spanish Colonial and Mexican California as a member of Los Californios. David was one of the founders of the Sherman Heights Community Center, and has served three terms as chair of the Greater Golden Hill Planning Committee, the City recognized community planning group for the neighborhoods of Golden Hill. He is an avid collector, with a focus on the Arts and Crafts movement.
Amie Hayes returned to SOHO in 2015 as the Historic Resources Specialist. She holds a Master's in Preservation Studies from Boston University and brings experience gained from the Planning and Economic Development divisions for the City of Somerville (MA) were she supported the Planning Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals, and Historic Preservation Commission. Now working closely with SOHO's Executive Director, Hayes advocates for historic resources and preservation issues; educates others about San Diego history and historic preservation; offers guidance to owners and developers of historic properties; and prepares technical reports for historic designation, environmental responses, and similar projects. Amie also acts as a field representative, implements preservation programming such as façade easements, and supports the board of directors and Preservation Action Committee (PAC).
