Whalen Ranch

Near Oceanside, this ranch traces its history back to the family of the legendary Pio Pico, the last Mexican governor of California. In 1911 the John Whalen family rented the ranch and assumed ownership in 1934 turning their ranch into a bird sanctuary by the 1950's. Miss Whalen left it to the City of Oceanside making a provision to preserve the property as a wildlife & bird sanctuary.

Now, development threatens the lake, which is not only a much-needed wildlife resource but also one of the few remaining fragments of Oceanside's early history and its association with the Pico, Aguirre, and Whalen families.
