Historic Neighborhoods

Preserving the character of older neighborhoods has become an escalating battle. The disturbing national trend to demolish existing homes in long-established neighborhoods and communities to build out-of-scale "McMansions" and large condominium complexes is having a marked affect in areas such as Mission Hills, La Jolla and Coronado - places recognized for their rich cultural history and architectural heritage. Without implementing and enforcing restrictions to better protect these and many other neighborhoods, their livability and beauty will continue to erode at a startling pace.

Adding greatly to the challenge of preserving historic neighborhoods within the City of San Diego, Mayor Jerry Sanders' current proposed changes to the application of the Mills Act illogically threaten to bring this highly successful program to its functional end. The potential loss of the Mills Act - the primary incentive for most homeowners to seek historical designation, will result in the loss of many of the places that matter to San Diegans.
