Rancho Guejito

The pristine, 22,000-acre Rancho Guejito is the last, most intact example of an original Mexican land grant and it is simply gorgeous. No other cultural landscape in San Diego County represents old California in its natural state as well as this sweeping terrain near Escondido. SOHO, working with other environmental groups, is trying to protect the ranch as a nature preserve or national park. It is under a looming threat of major housing and commercial development. As many as 10,000 new homes could be built here, wiping out early adobes, Native American sites, and other historic and natural resources. It is imperative that this cultural landscape be saved for the public. To save it, we must marshal more public support and the political will.
