SOHO President's Monthly Message
December 2016
By Jaye MacAskill
Welcome to the holiday season! Traditionally a time for reflecting upon the highs and lows of the passing year, I think many of you would agree that 2016 was, to say the least, a bumpy ride. As the President of SOHO's Board of Directors, I am at least grateful and happy to say that, while the rest of the world sometimes looked like it was falling apart, SOHO had another impressively stable and productive year.
One of the reasons that SOHO remains a powerful advocate for historic preservation year after year is because of our members and supporters! Whether you provide monetary donations or valuable volunteer hours, or both, your personal contributions help SOHO achieve its mission. To make SOHO stronger than ever in 2017, I urge everyone to take some extra measures to help prepare us for several looming, large preservation battles, including the fight to save Balboa Park, and likely the California Theatre as well.
Saving our environment is an important and crucial quality of life issue for all of us. Our historic buildings, neighborhoods, and landscapes are all a part of that environment. If you too believe in the role of historic preservation in improving our lives through irreplaceable resources, please consider recruiting all of the potential members you know to join SOHO before the end of 2016. There are many hundreds of people out there who want to be connected to our heritage in a tangible way and would be honored to be a part of our organization. They just need to be made aware of who SOHO is and what SOHO does.
At a time when historic resources are once again being regularly threatened by development and mismanagement, we are counting on you to get out and spread the word for us! Membership numbers are one of the most powerful weapons that we as preservationists can yield. When thinking about what to give as holiday gifts this season, please consider buying SOHO gift memberships. As easy as going to our (online membership page), it's a great way to show additional support for SOHO, and there is no gift-wrapping required!
On behalf of the SOHO board of directors and staff, I wish everyone a happy, healthy, and safe holiday season. I hope we all get some time to relax and rest up for what will likely be another active year on the frontlines of historic preservation in San Diego.
