Ocean Beach
By the Ocean Beach Historical Society
Ocean Beach, a neighborhood of San Diego, is known throughout the city, county, and beyond as a unique and quirky place with the feel of a small town, despite being a stone's throw from the center of a major metropolis. Founded in 1887 in a coastal area known for its beautiful cliffs and rock formations, Ocean Beach went through growing pains in the early 1900s before establishing itself as a family-oriented, self-contained beach community by the mid-1930s. Full of mom-and-pop stores and very walkable, Ocean Beach is a favorite destination for thousands of tourists and San Diegans each year.

Mission Hills
By Allen Hazard & Janet O'Dea
Several visionaries shaped the character that defines present-day Mission Hills. There was Sarah Miller, stepdaughter of Captain Johnston of the SS Orizaba; and Kate Sessions, the mother of Balboa Park, who convinced John D. Spreckles to expand the streetcar route to accommodate her Mission Hills nursery. In 1905, George Marston commissioned landscape architect and urban planner John Nolan to implement a development plan for the city. Though never adopted, in 1908, Marston's syndicate formed the restricted subdivision of Mission Hills. Then, in 1909, the city announced plans to celebrate the opening of the Panama Canal. The fuse was lit, and the boom that followed brought builders and skilled artisans to San Diego.
