Why you matter to your community's Planning Board
December 2015
By Amie K. Hayes

The holidays are a social season of parties, gifts and festivals. SOHO celebrates with the community through events like the members' Holiday Potluck and the Festival of Trees in Balboa Park. During this time of giving, people often think about how they can do better the next year, like increasing their volunteer hours and other community involvement. Making this a priority means more information, or awareness, is flowing throughout the neighborhood. Looking toward 2016, SOHO hopes you take an interest in your community or neighborhood and become "in the know."

San Diego Planning Commission in session

Attending your community planning board meetings is one way to become more informed. Monthly meetings can teach what changes and progress are coming to your neighborhood. They offer an opportunity to ask questions and make your community and city officials aware of pressing issues. Taking an active interest in your community board will help you be more than just informed, it will also enable you to share and to advocate on certain topics, such as historic preservation.

The planning boards are made up of elected volunteer residents with diverse backgrounds, priorities and affiliations. Sadly, experience with historic preservation is often under represented, which is why you can make a difference. As you learn and take an interest in the community, including how the board works, your increased participation will strengthen awareness and support for historic resources.
