Amy Strong Castle
November/December 2024

One of San Diego County's most eclectic historic homes is Amy Strong Castle in Ramona. Built in 1921 by architects John Vawter and Emmor Brooke Weaver and now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it was constructed during the Arts and Crafts era. The castle's design is a unique fusion of styles, featuring French stonework, Dutch windmills, Spanish bricks and tiles, and Medieval-inspired gargoyles and arches.

By the late 2000s, the former home had fallen into neglect, with years of deferred maintenance threatening its survival through "demolition by neglect." In 2009, SOHO placed the Amy Strong Castle on its Most Endangered List, highlighting the urgent need for action. After SOHO met with the owners, they were so inspired by what SOHO saw as a viable vision for the site that they decided to invest in its restoration rather than abandon it.

Now known as Mt. Woodson Castle, the once-neglected property has been fully restored and transformed into one of the county's most popular wedding venues. The carefully preserved main house now blends its historic charm with modern conveniences, offering guests the opportunity to enjoy the castle's beauty alongside updated amenities. The castle’s preservation story demonstrates the power of visionary advocacy and the transformational potential of breathing new life into historic landmarks.
