San Diego Places Once on SOHO's Endangered List Now Flourish
November/December 2024
One of the many saved sites that were once endangered, the 24-mile Bayshore Bikeway uses portions of the historic Coronado Belt Line right-of-way, allowing cyclists to ride along the original railway's route that encircles the San Diego Bay. Nearly 30 years ago, SOHO introduced the Most Endangered List to spotlight San Diego's at-risk cultural and historic treasures. Since 1998, this initiative has been one of our most powerful tools to raise awareness, drive action, and ensure the preservation of landmarks in a city and region facing some of the highest development pressures in the world.
Of the 94 sites we've identified and publicized since the program's inception, an impressive 58 percent have been saved. Being listed as one of San Diego's Most Endangered can be a game-changer—discouraging demolition, halting inappropriate development, and sparking interest in rehabilitation and adaptive reuse. Many of these listings have also attracted critical funding, further supporting their preservation.
The eight sites described below represent a few key examples of significant resources that once faced uncertainty and the risk of loss. Thanks to relentless efforts by SOHO and active community support, they are now thriving symbols of the power of preservation, contributing richly to their neighborhoods. These success stories show what can be achieved through collective dedication, community advocacy, and a shared belief in the value of our heritage.
These historic places could not have been saved without the dedication and awareness of the people who lived and worked in their surrounding communities.
SOHO celebrates each of these success stories, but, of course, there is still much work to be done, with many important places throughout San Diego County that remain endangered today.

With your help, we can continue saving places that matter. Support our work by giving to SOHO's general fund.
