SOHO's Dedication to San Diego’s Adobe Legacy
Casa de Estudillo
Old Town San Diego State Historic Park
November/December 2024

Casa de Estudillo is one of the most historically significant adobes in San Diego and in the state. Built in 1827, this adobe structure served as the home of the influential Estudillo family and remains a focal point in Old Town San Diego’s cultural landscape. Over the centuries, the house has faced various preservation challenges, and its upkeep is critical to maintaining the authenticity and history of the region.

In collaboration with Old Town San Diego State Historic Park, SOHO played a major role in preserving this important site by helping to organize a hands-on restoration workshop, thanks to funding the state received from the California State Parks Foundation. The workshop provided an invaluable opportunity for volunteers to gain practical experience in the repair and restoration of adobe structures.

The immediate goal was to restore large sections of the Casa de Estudillo walls, including repairing previously poorly executed restoration work. However, the broader vision of SOHO’s involvement extended beyond this one building. Through our “Adobe U” initiative, SOHO sought to develop a trained core group of volunteers capable of responding to preservation needs at adobe sites throughout San Diego County.

Volunteers came from across the region, including as far away as San Juan Capistrano, Rancho Santa Fe, and La Mesa. Their dedication and teamwork allowed for substantial progress, with repairs completed on primary sections of the front facade, followed by whitewashing of the restored areas.

Over the past few years, California State Parks has completed several restoration projects, making Casa de Estudillo a must-see landmark when visiting Old Town.
