In the spirit of SOHO co-founder and architectural pen-and-ink artist Robert Miles Parker, we encourage you to explore KidSketch—a series of free, online lessons for sketching iconic buildings, offered by BEEP (Built Environment Education Program).
Partnering with San Diego architects and design professionals, this program is designed to inspire and encourage kids of all ages (adults included!) to observe and record the built environment through step-by-step lessons on drawing San Diego’s historical and modern structures.
Hosted by architect Laura DuCharme Conboy, KidSketch virtually visits a new location on the second Saturday of every month from 11am to noon. You have until 10am on the day of the event to register online. Register early to request free drawing supplies (drawing paper, pencil, pen, and a sketching tips handout) and they will be mailed to you via USPS.
The next online class, on November 11, 2023, will show you how to sketch the Japanese Friendship Garden Pavilion in Balboa Park. Because you’ll be sketching at your home, office, or perhaps on the beach, a photo of the pavilion will be provided for the class.
BEEP’s activities page at also offers previous KidSketch instructional videos on demand, printable drawing lessons, and a guide to rendering in perspective. The videos feature well-known buildings, such as the Hotel Del Coronado, the Santa Fe Depot, the La Jolla Woman’s Club and the Salk Institute. This entire rich program comes to you free, thanks to the San Diego Architectural Foundation.
