 Local florist, nursery owner and horticulturist Kate Sessions published hundreds of articles in San Diego Floral Association's magazine. All are captured in The Complete Writings of Kate Sessions in California Garden. Sessions was a University of California graduate and a talented writer. The book is illustrated with vintage nursery advertisements and rare historic photographs. |
The San Diego Floral Society is celebrating the horticultural and landscaping legacy of our own great Kate Sessions on November 13, 2021 in the Marston House gardens from 10am to noon. Sessions (1857-1940) was instrumental in planting trees and gardens in Balboa Park and for local home owners, studying botany and exchanging seeds with colleagues around the world, and in running her busy nursery and florist businesses.
SOHO is a proud sponsor for this free book and birthday event (Sessions was born on November 8) will include a short program, tours of the Marston House and the exhibit the Marston Legacy: Progress and Preservation (with paid admission), and access to the Marston House Museum Shop.
Parking - Free parking along Balboa Drive, Sixth Avenue, Upas and Thorn Streets. Please note there is no parking directly on Seventh Avenue.
In a salute to this San Diego icon, the Floral Society is offering a free copy of the book California Garden Centennial with every purchase of The Complete Writings of Kate Sessions in California Garden ($25), published by the Floral Society in 2020. Sessions wrote hundreds of articles for California Garden magazine and they're not only a historic record of her work with plants and trees, but also a useful reference for today's gardeners.
