Virtual Marston House Museum
November/December 2020
The library was George Marston's home office and space to enjoy his collection of maps and books. The built-in bookcases hold hundreds of titles, necessary for a family of avid readers and writers. Photo by Sandé Lollis |
SOHO is producing two important digital tours of the Marston House Museum & Gardens that we want you to be among the first to know about.
Allowing members, scholars, students, and the general public access to the museum and SOHO's specialty tours is a high priority during this time of social distancing. Virtual tours also provide access to a wider, national, and even international audience. If you can't travel to the Marston House, we'll bring the property to you. The virtual tours will showcase the historic architecture and furnishings, the gardens, and the people who inspire us.
Volunteers, Marston House historian Sarai Johnson and SOHO board member Paul Johnson are producing the series for us.
Also coming soon: Virtual visitors from the vast Arts and Crafts community through a Zoom tour of the Marston House Museum, co-hosted by the Stickley Museum at Craftsman Farms in New Jersey. Its "Farms Afield" program, free to its members, virtually visits sites throughout the U.S., including historic places, museums, and libraries. SOHO is delighted to host and connect with fellow Arts and Crafts enthusiasts throughout the nation. The 1905 Marston mansion is the most significant remaining structure by the San Diego master architects Sterling Hebbard and Irving Gill and one of the finest examples of Arts and Crafts architecture in California.
Longtime SOHO volunteer and historian and member of both organizations, Allen Hazard will give a 30-minute virtual talk about the Marstons and their architects, followed by a 45-minute tour of the Marston House Museum, including spaces not on the in-person tours.
