Del Mar's Dunham House Saved, Finds New Home
November/December 2020

Dunham house in Del MarSOHO was informed of the potential demolition of the historic Dunham House over the summer, thanks to Laura DeMarco of the Del Mar Historical Society (read more HERE). While the original relocation plan has changed, SOHO is excited to report that due to the diligence of the Del Mar Historical Society, the San Dieguito Heritage Museum will provide a permanent new home for this c. 1885 Victorian era cottage, just ten miles away in Encinitas (read more HERE). However, since this relocation site is farther away than expected, additional funds are needed.

To see how you can support this effort, read the flyer with this article HERE or visit About Dunham House.

When SOHO first learned of this perilous situation, the hope was to relocate the Dunham House to the nearby site of the Winston School, owned by the City and close to the historic heart of Del Mar. However, after discussions with City officials to understand the required process and working within the property owner's development timeline, SOHO was relieved when the San Dieguito Heritage Museum stepped up.

The Winston School site still has available space. Although we know moving a historic structure to this parcel is complicated, perhaps there is now time to facilitate relocation of the historic Alvarado House, which was "temporarily" relocated to the Del Mar Fairgrounds in 1989. Read more on that house HERE.
