SOHO's Marston House docent team represents a cross-section of ages and interests, and we share a robust love of learning. Our continuing education program takes advantage of the knowledge and experience of our docents, whose interests and expertise are wide-ranging. Together, we introduce fresh ideas, new information, and historical context to enrich our education and our guided tours.
Suzanne Friedrich, a high school art teacher, gave a talk and slide show on the historic La Jolla Green Dragon Colony. Joanne Ward presented a class on Gill's masterwork, the Dodge House in Los Angeles. Gwen Peck recently received her master's degree in architecture history from the University of Virginia. She spoke with authority about the impact and influence of the early 20th-century City Beautiful Movement.
Master woodworker William Van Dusen led fellow docents on a tour through the Marston House, discussing the different varieties of woods used and their origins. Paul Johnson, a long-time docent and preservation architect, spoke on the history of the restoration of the Marston House. In November, Peck will return to discuss the popular Craftsman bungalow style of residential architecture.
As you can tell, the Marston House docents are a talented and dedicated group of people. We can always use more help and welcome new docent candidates. Please let us know if you're interested by submitting an application HERE.
