Franciscan Cantor Concert at Adobe Chapel
By Robin Lakin
November/December 2019
Ancient hymns that once resounded throughout the Adobe Chapel in Old Town San Diego will ring out again during a special free performance by Franciscan cantor Brother Michael Lomas on November 17. He'll be singing from 1-4pm, and visitors are invited to stop in for a while or for the entire performance. The warm acoustics of the historic adobe building carry the lyrics and harmonies familiar to the early San Diegans who regularly occupied the chapel's humble wooden pews.
A cantor for the Mission Basilica of San Diego de Alcalá and Old Mission San Luis Rey, where he resides with his Franciscan community, Brother Michael was born into a musical family. He began his formal training on violin and cello in college, along with studying voice with Dr. Betty Ann Owren in San Jose. He is continuing his musical studies at the University of San Diego.
Please come visit the Adobe Chapel for this rare treat: Float on heavenly music back to when Franciscan friars sang at this venerable, marbelized altar from c. 1858, and gaze upon the rare, 18th-century statue of the Immaculate Conception, San Diego's Lost Patroness. She is temporarily on exhibit, rising from her original tabernacle on the altar, through December 29, 2019.
Brother Michael will perform at the Adobe Chapel, 3963 Conde Street, from 1-4pm Sunday, November 17, 2019. Admission is free.
