"Terrace Talk" Features Marston Sisters and Other Pioneering Women
November/December 2018

On December 1, SOHO will present the second in a series of "Terrace Talks,"lively conversations with experts and the audience, at the historic Marston House Museum & Gardens in Balboa Park. The Saturday morning talks, which begin at 11am, complement The Marston Legacy: Progress and Preservation, a new permanent exhibit on view throughout the handsome Arts and Crafts home.

Don't miss "Progressive Women of Early 20th-Century San Diego," when three recognized historians will discuss pioneering leaders. Two of these historic figures are well-known: horticulturalist and nurserywoman Kate O. Sessions and La Jolla philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps. Others deserve wider recognition, including George and Anna Marston's four activist daughters, who worked for civil rights, voter registration in the Deep South, and immigrant education; and Alice Klauber, a nationally prominent artist who helped organize the Fine Arts exhibition at the 1915 Panama-California Exposition in Balboa Park.

The panelists include Nancy Carol Carter, an expert on Sessions and Balboa Park horticulture who serves on many park preservation committees; Molly McLain, author of Ellen Browning Scripps: New Money & American Philanthropy and a University of San Diego history professor; and Sarai Johnson, an architectural historian and research professional, Marston House historian, and the site's former manager for nine years. She'll focus on the lives of the Marston sisters, who eventually bequeathed the Marston House and its historic gardens to the City of San Diego upon Mary Marston's death in 1987.

Tickets, which include light refreshments, cost $10 and may be purchased in advance online HERE or by calling (619) 297-9327. Please see future issues of Our Heritage eNews and SOHO's website for more "Terrace Talks" in 2019.

The Marston House, 3525 Seventh Ave., is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. House tours, which include the Marston Legacy exhibit, require separate admission, and are offered Friday through Sunday from 10am to 5pm. For more information, please visit www.SOHOsandiego.org
