The City of San Diego's dedicated City Clerk, Elizabeth Maland, who won a SOHO People in Preservation award in 2017 for Outstanding Public Service, continues to highlight the importance of archival records, alongside the Records Management Division.
In October, the Cty presented the 2nd Annual Archives Month, which focused on San Diego's formation from the 1850s through 1905. "The Framers" exhibit, displayed in the lobby of the City Administration Building, featured documents of the Common Council in 1850, 1889, and 1905, and archival records by the Board of Trustees, Board of Freeholders, Board of Alderman, and Board of Delegates. Archives Month also offered an array of free lectures by local historians and archivists on topics like Kate Sessions, the Horton Era, and the Common Council.
Founded in 1987, the Archives Program is dedicated to the identification, preservation, and storage of records that document the governance of the City. "Preserving original and trustworthy records and making them accessible to our citizens is a vital function in our democracy," Maland stated.
Don't miss next year's 3rd Annual Archives Month in October 2019, which may focus on San Diego's military history during the 1940s. |
